MEET ALMARIE
From Stitches to Skeins, My Yarn Journey
I’m Almarié Conradie, the heart and hands behind Beth’Ani Hand-Dyed Cotton Yarns.
My story begins long before I picked up a hook – woven into the lives of the women who came before me. My grandmother, great-grandmother, my mom, and even our sweet neighbour across the street all shared a gift for turning thread into beauty. Knitting, crochet, tatting, Irish lace, embroidery – their skills were endless.
And yet, for years, I only dipped my toes into their world. A little knitting in high school (thanks to Home Economics), a touch of embroidery here and there… but nothing that truly caught fire.
That changed about a decade ago. My dad was in surgery, and my mom and I were sitting in a hospital waiting room, the hours stretching endlessly. I turned to her and said, “Teach me to crochet.”
She did – and from that moment, something in me shifted.
From the first loops of single crochet, half-double, and double, my hands found a rhythm and my heart found a home. What began as a way to calm my nerves quickly became an irresistible pull. I wasn’t just making stitches; I was falling in love – with the craft, and with the yarn itself.
For the longest time, I thought natural-fibre, hand-dyed yarn was a luxury beyond my reach. But the moment I learned what it truly takes – the skill, the patience, the artistry – I understood. Each skein was not just yarn, but a work of art, holding colour, texture, and story in its strands.
Then came spinning – taking raw fibre and coaxing it into yarn with my own hands. It’s a kind of alchemy, and it deepened my respect for every part of the journey from fluff to finished skein.
Beth’Ani was born from that love. Each cake of cotton is hand-dyed with intention and joy, ready to be part of your story.
